20190426 - Mount Juliet High School - Mock Vehicle Accident
1875 Golden Bear Gateway - The City of Mount Juliet Police and Fire Departments, Wilson County Emergency Management Agency, and Vanderbilt LifeFlight took part in their annual mock vehicle wreck to show the students what could happen when someone drives impaired or distracted. The "victims" are students from the high school who have volunteered to participate. The vehicles are provided by Hamblen's Wrecker Service.
Since 2007, the city has been doing this demonstration ahead of prom in hopes that students won't get behind the wheel while under the influence. More recently, the dangers of distracted driving have also been part of the message they are trying to convey.
During this particular simulation, two vehicles are to have collided head-on and the passengers sustained severe, if not fatal injuries.
Responders approach the scene with their lights and sirens and demonstrate what they would do at any other accident. The police investigate the cause(s), provide crowd control, and secure the scene from hazards so that Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics can remove the victims from the vehicles and transport them to area hospitals. During this scenario, a helicopter from Vanderbilt LifeFlight landed to the south of the scene on the roadway and one victim was loaded onboard to be taken to a trauma center in Nashville.
