20200730 - City of Mount Juliet - Hazmat Incident
2765 North Mount Juliet Road - Just after 11:40 am, City of Mount Juliet Police and Firefighters along with Wilson County EMA Medics were dispatched to a report of an unresponsive male in a vehicle in the rear parking lot of the Library.
The first arriving unit was an MJPD A-Shift Sergeant. He made contact with the victim who appeared to be unresponsive as the result of a narcotics overdose. The Sergeant ran back to his patrol car to retrieve his department issued Narcan kit in an attempt to counteract whatever substance the subject may have been under the influence of. At that moment, Wilson County EMA Medic-10 (C Shift) arrived on the scene and assumed care of the individual.
The subject was removed and placed in the back of the ambulance and emergency care measures were initiated.
Additional resources began to arrive on the scene including FDMJ Engine-104 (B Shift) and additional MJPD officers. Upon further investigation into the cause of the man's condition, it was determined that he had likely ingested a hazardous substance believed to be Potassium Cyanide. All activities stopped, perimeters were established, all manpower were moved uphill and upwind.
The victim was determined to be deceased. All person's that were either inside the ambulance with him or that had been inside the subject's vehicle were taken to TriStar Summit Hospital Center for evaluation of possible exposure.
A Hazardous Materials response team from the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency was requested to respond to the scene to contain hazards, clean up the scene and decontaminate the deceased for safe transportation to the Medical Examiner's office.
All 7 first responders that were possibly exposed to the substance were held in the emergency department for a 6-hour observation period and then released.
