20200221 - City of Mount Juliet - Overturned Truck
Interstate 40 westbound @ Exit 226 - Just a few moments before 10:00 PM, Mount Juliet Police and Fire began receiving reports of a serious traffic collision just east of the interchange, including one report from a Metro Nashville Police Officer that was on their way to work.
Initial reports indicated that there were two tractor-trailers overturned and a pickup truck closing all westbound lanes of the interstate. The Metro Police officer also reported that there was a driver entrapped inside the pickup truck. One of the initial callers reported that the pickup truck had traveled the wrong direction down the exit ramp against the flow of traffic. The first arriving unit was Mount Juliet Shift Supervisor Corporal Josh Lo [B-20] who confirmed the majority of the initial reports but stated that there was only one tractor-trailer overturned in the roadway, however is was a tandem, with two trailers in tow.
Shortly thereafter, Fire Department of Mount Juliet Tower-114 (C Shift) arrived on the scene as did Wilson County EMA Medic-10 (B Shift). Due to the nature of the incident and the type of vehicles involved, Squad-103 was also dispatched to the scene.
The crews managed to extricate the driver of the pickup truck who was conscious and alert and ultimately transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Traffic control measures were implemented by the Mt Juliet Police Department's Community Service Officer, the Lebanon Police Department's Emergency Services Unit, and TDOT's Highway Incident Response Unit (HELP Trucks)and traffic was diverted off the interstate at exit 229.
Hamblen's Wrecker Service was requested to the scene by the Tennessee Highway Patrol to remove the segments of the truck from the lanes of travel and ultimately upright and remove them from the highway. Independent towing was requested for the pickup truck.
Once the truck was pulled from the roadway, several lanes of the interstate were reopened and traffic began flowing.
Additional information will be published once the crash report is completed by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
