20191127 - City of Lebanon - Motor Vehicle Accident
Interstate 40 westbound @ Interchange 239 - At approximately 3:30 PM, first responders were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident reportedly involving 4cars and a tractor-trailer.
Units from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Lebanon Police Department, Lebanon Fire Department, and Wilson County Emergency Management Agency all responded to the scene.
City of Lebanon Police officers and Lebanon Fire Department Shift Commander Chris Stockton [400] arrived first quickly followed by Wilson EMA Engine-1 under the command of Lieutenant David Cross [803].
Units arrived to find 3 passenger cars and a tractor-trailer involved in a wreck in the westbound lanes of the interstate on an overpass, and another tractor-trailer that had left the roadway and fallen to the railroad tracks below.
The occupants of the vehicles on the interstate were not entrapped and had no obvious serious injuries. The occupant of the fallen tractor-trailer was unconscious and there was extensive damage to the truck but he was not entrapped.
As additional units and manpower arrived, the male occupant of the truck was extricated and removed to the ambulance. After a rapid assessment, LifeFlight-1 was requested to respond to the scene.
LifeFlight-1 landed nearby and transported the patient to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. His condition is unknown at this time.
Update: According to information obtained from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, westbound traffic was slowing due to holiday congestion. The driver of a tractor-trailer failed to reduce speed and crossed the center line between lanes one and two striking one of the 'collateral damage' vehicles initiating a chain reaction. After this initial collision, the tractor-trailer veered off the highway striking a guardrail and dirt embankment and became airborne. The truck fell approximately 50 feet and came to rest on the railroad tracks. The driver that was air-lifted to Vanderbilt did survive.
