20190909 - Unincorporated Lebanon - Burglary/Pursuit
At approximately 9:00am, a female resident at 2136 Old Shannon Rd called 911 to report a suspicious person and vehicle on her property. She stated that the vehicle, a dark colored SUV, was parked behind her home and a black male with long hair was on her back porch attempting to gain entry. She stated she didn't recognize the man or the vehicle. Several deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Deputy Travis Donnell was fairly close and arrived on the scene in a relatively short amount of time. As Deputy Donnell was coming up the driveway he saw the car and walked around the back of the residence and made contact with a male fitting the callers description. The male, seeing the deputy, retreated to his vehicle and fled the scene. At that time, a Sheriff’s Detective was arriving and his vehicle was struck by the fleeing suspect.
Deputies gave chase northbound along Old Shannon Road with Speeds in excess of 60mph. Sergeant Kyle Wright positioned himself at Old Shannon Road and Franklin Road and deployed a Stinger spike system. The suspect vehicle contacted the spikes with its passenger side tires and headed west on Franklin Road.
The suspect continued to flee, now with his vehicle partially disabled, still at speeds which are not prudent to back roads. As the suspect headed through an S-turn, he lost control of the vehicle spun, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway now traveling in reverse and coming to rest in a ditch.
The suspect, who was identified by authorities as Roger Watts, was then involved in an altercation with deputies ending with him being tased and placed in handcuffs. At one point in the struggle, the suspect had his hand on Deputy Donnell's service weapon.
Firefighters and Medics from the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene and the suspect was evaluated on scene and transported to Vanderbilt-Wilson County where he was treated and released and then booked into Wilson County Jail where he faces charges including 2 counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.
According to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Watts is a convicted felon with past weapons and drug charges out of Shelby County, TN. At the time of his arrest he had no current active warrants. Pending the outcome of the investigation, Mr. Watts may face additional charges. An initial court appearance in General Sessions Court has been set for January 23, 2020.
