20181104 - City of Mount Juliet - Drone Rescue
300 Mundy Memorial Dr - At approximately 9:15 AM, a call was received by Mt Juliet Police & Fire Communications from a citizen requesting the assistance of the Fire Department of Mt Juliet in retrieving a drone (hobby aircraft) from the top of a tall tree.
C-Shift Commander Captain Mike Leal [1103] agreed to help and Tower-114 and Engine-104 made their way down to the park.
The drone was located atop a tall Sweet Gum tree at the back of the park adjacent to the water tower. Firefighter Andy Hassler was able to find a suitable location to set-up the outriggers to support the 82,000 Lb tower ladder, and then Firefighter Bryan Travis took the controls in the bucket and made his way to the top if the tree to recover the aircraft.
Firefighter Travis quickly made the grab and returned to the ground to hand the drone over to its owner who was relieved and quite thankful.
This particular drone is a hobby / racing drone capable of traveling at speeds around 100 Mph!
It is equipped with a standard guidance camera for the remote pilot to view, as well as a GoPro. The gentleman had been flying the previous day and had gotten the aircraft stuck and tried for several hours to free it on his own with the power of the drone, but was unsuccessful and decided to return the next morning to see if it would fall from the tree over night.
