20180606 - Unincorporated Mount Juliet - Shooting / Perp Search
Gwin Place & Quarry Road - At approximately 2:30 PM, Wilson County Sheriff's Deputies and Paramedics from the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency were dispatched to a report of a shooting.
The first arriving deputy confirmed the reports and advised he had a female down in the yard with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the perpetrator had fled the scene. Incoming units were advised to establish a perimeter.
Wilson EMA Medic-61 arrived on the scene and began care of the victim. Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville was placed on Trauma Alert. Once a quick assessment was completed and some initial care completed, the ambulance departed.
As additional sheriff's deputies arrived in the area, a search of the heavily wooded area around the scene began. These searches in the immediate area were unsuccessful. The perimeter was expanded and searches continued. Assistance was also received from the Tennessee Highway Patrol Aviation Unit.
At one point during the search, it was believed that the suspect may have been inside the Mount Juliet city limits. This also turned out not to be the case.
After some time, the suspect was located approximately 1.5 miles away. Multiple deputies, the Special Response Team, a negotiator, and the Sheriff himself responded to this location and tried for several hours to talk the subject down and convince him to turn himself in. In the end, the suspect made the decision to take his own life. No law enforcement officers were injured while attempting to locate or take the suspect into custody.
