20171204 - City of Mount Juliet - Structure Fire
707 West Division Street - At 4:00 PM, A City of Mt Juliet Police Officer was flagged down by a citizen who stated there was a garage on fire across from the cemetery on West Division Street. The officer immediately relayed this information to his dispatchers and rushed to the scene. At this time, the Fire Department of the City of Mount Juliet was dispatched. Upon the arrival of the police officer, he did confirm that there was a garage on fire and that it was well involved.
A moment or two later, Deputy Chief Chris Allen [Chief-102] arrived on scene and relayed to dispatch that he had a well involved 50' x 25' one story garage, established command, and gave the order to initiate the Working Fire Protocol. This brought an ambulance from Wilson County EMA, the Wilson County Emergency Services Rehab Unit, on-call fire investigators, and Middle Tennessee Electric to the scene. The next arriving unit was "A-Shift" Commander Captain Nick Ford [1201] in Brush-100. Not far behind him was Squad-103 which responded out of station 3. Upon their arrival, one 1.75” hand line was stretched to the “A" side of the building and suppression efforts were initiated.
Engine-104, which responded from station 1, arrived a few moments later and secured a viable water source and laid in to the scene and supplied Squad-103. The crew of Engine-104 stretched a second 1.75” hardline off of Squad-103 and assisted in suppression. Fire Chief Jamie Luffman [Chief-101] arrived on scene and assumed the role of accountability officer.
While working to extinguish the fire, it was discovered that a male occupant had perished in the fire. Firefighters made a strong effort to leave that part of the building as undisturbed as possible for investigation purposes. Detectives and the Medical Examiner were summoned to the scene.
Once the fire was under control and determined to be fully extinguished, the Mt Juliet detectives and fire investigators began their investigation but elected to not enter the structure. Due to the manner of death, a structure fire, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and The State Fire Marshal’s Officer were also requested to respond to the scene to assist in determining the cause and origin of the fire, and the circumstances that lead to the victim’s death. Once all agencies were on scene, and a briefing was conducted, the joint team entered together.
The Fire Department of Mt Juliet made a quick knock-down and an excellent stop. The fire remains under investigation. No other civilians or responders were injured. FDMJ responded to the scene with a total of 21 personnel; 11 full-time (including off duty on-call) and 10 volunteers. WEMA responded with 2 personnel. MJPD responded with numerous officers, detectives, and command staff, all acting in numerous capacities.
UPDATE: Investigators have concluded their investigation and have determined that there is no indication of foul play. The Medical Examiner's report is still pending.
