20170301 - Watertown - Storm Damage
At approximately 7:40 AM, a line of storms tore through Watertown bringing with it severe thunderstorms and strong winds. Numerous trees, houses, and outbuildings sustained damage from the wind.
A crew from the National Weather Service was dispatched to assess the damage and make a determination as to the type of wind storm that caused the damage. It was later confirmed that an EF-1 tornado did touchdown north of Sparta Pike, and Straight Line winds caused the remainder of the damage.
After the storm had passed and emergency crews were surveying the damage, a Wilson County Sheriff's Deputy reported a house fire at 1800 Holmes Gap Road. Firefighters from the Watertown Volunteer Fire Department and Wilson County Emergency Management Agency were on scene in minutes since they were already on the road.
Watertown firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack and quickly knocked down the fire and were able to contain it to the living room. All occupants were safely out of the structure. The cause of the blaze appears to be a power surge following re-energizing of area power lines.
There have been no injuries or fatalities associated with the storms as they relate to Watertown.
